Happy Monday Big Brainiacs!

If you live in the US, today is a weird day…Like are we on vacation already for the 4th of July or are we working today?

Either way, Big Brain has you covered.

Today's AI spotlights:

  • Elon blocks AI companies from scraping Twitter 🐦

  • The new era of AI interaction is here 🤩

  • EU business push back on proposed AI Act 🛑

📢 FEATURED AI TOOL: Nette

Nette is a Research OS for the Web

Use it to gather information, organise, analyse and publish—all in one place!

In classic Musk style, new Twitter limitations have dropped that are attributed to AI startups scraping "vast amounts of data".

To the horror of many Twitter-addicts (guilty as charged), Elon tweeted the following message over the weekend:

These limits have since been raised to 10K, 1K, and 0.5K respectively.

Musk claimed the limitations, which kicked in a day after Twitter started blocking non-logged-in access, were necessary due to aggressive data scraping affecting user experience.

It’s already been reported that ChatGPT’s web browsing extension can no longer access Twitter’s data.

This raises an important question: What will the future of AI look like if other companies follow in Twitter’s footsteps and also block access?

We have some big news for the AI techies out there:

A research team from Georgia Tech, Adobe Research, and Stanford University are stepping up AI interaction.

Their brand new toy, LLaVAR (Large Language and Vision Assistant that Can Read), combines visual and text-based comprehension.

And we have to say, it doesn't disappoint.

An AI that not only 'sees' images but also reads and understands text within them. This is all courtesy of OCR techniques.

So what's the TL;DR on this? It enhances the AI's alignment between language and visuals.

As a result, LLaVAR delivers more sophisticated instruction-following capabilities. And the best part is that both the data and model are open to the public.

Welcome to the new era of multimodal AI.

The EU is getting tough on AI...

They're aiming to pioneer the regulatory space. However, this of course comes with critics voicing their concerns.

In an open letter, big shot European execs from Siemens, Dassault, and Heineken (among 163 others) called out the draft AI Act. They're asking for fewer restrictions and less bureaucracy.

The proposed act, they argue, might stifle AI innovation. Comparing generative AI to the microchip and the internet, they're concerned Europe could become less attractive to AI innovators.

The AI Act includes things like a biometrics ban and labeling AI-generated content.

While it was amended to regulate generative AI models such as ChatGPT and Bing, the concerned companies feel that it will inevitably bleed into their world.
