Welcome back, friends! Big Brain here with your Thursday morning, AI news summary.

As per usual, Elon can’t keep himself out of the spotlight. But that’s okay, since he’s our favorite rocket-launching, Doge-pumping, social media CEO.

🔦 Today's AI spotlights:

  • Twitter is integrating AI?

  • Universal gets serious about IP

  • The US increases pressure on AI

  • AI tools usage sees massive gains

🔦 TWITTER IS INTEGRATING AI?

Elon Musk is...pro-AI?

Musk has been investing in AI development for Twitter. This is in contrast to his signing of the famous "6-month-pause" letter.

Development seems to be in its early stages.

Insider thinks that Musk's wants to improve two parts of the app:

Twitter's search and ad functions.

Both of these have slews of critics. Many attribute a drop in ad revenue to Musk's controversial public persona.

Musk hasn't commented on this "development" yet. Perhaps at the Possible Conference?

As a reminder, Elon was a co-founder of OpenAI, before parting ways.

He’s been thinking about this tech for years & we suspect he has something big up his sleeve.

🔦 UNIVERSAL GETS SERIOUS ABOUT IP

If an AI creates art, whose property is it?

This question is being asked ad nauseam these days.

Well, Universal Music Group may have an answer.

UMG is urging streaming services to block AI from scraping copyrighted material.

They're concerned about AI-generated music sounding too much like popular artists.

One example: Google's MusicLM generates songs from text-prompts. It's trained on 280,000 hours of original music.

Yet, it's not released due to risks of copyright infringement.

So how are the streaming services reacting?

Spotify declined to comment and Apple did not respond to requests for comments.

🔦 THE US INCREASES PRESSURE ON AI

China and the US are always competing over something.

This week saw the announcement of AI guidelines for Chinese companies.

The US government's response? "Hold my beer."

Today, the Biden administration said they're pushing stronger safety measures for AI tools. The president said this needs to happen before their release.

Additionally, the U.S. Commerce Department is stepping into the limelight.

They're seeking opinions on AI audits and risk assessments. This is being done in response to consumer concerns.

The NTIA is also seeking feedback on policies that could make commercial AI tools more accountable.

AI TOOLS USAGE SEES MASSIVE GAINS

Generative AI tools are gaining massive popularity in app stores.

Many attribute the 1480% increase in AI Chatbot apps to ChatGPT’s API release in March.

Downloads for AI-powered apps have also increased by 1506% year-on-year.

Some other cool metrics include:

  • 20 million downloads in March

  • $3 million of in-app spending in March

  • 4184% increase of in-app spending y/y

Metrics like these should only add interest to this burgeoning use case.
