OpenAI's going full doomsday prepper mode...

They've launched what they're calling the "Preparedness" team (along with the "Preparedness Challenge"). Led by Aleksander Madry from MIT, its goal is to protect us all from AI's potential "catastrophic risks."

Think phishing on steroids and... nuclear threats? Yep, that one made the list.

Given that CEO Sam Altman's been vocal about AI having the potential to lead to our downfall, it shouldn't be a surprise that the company is taking this action.

Regarding that "Preparedness Challenge" part? OpenAI is using that to crowd-source AI risk ideas, dangling $25k and a job as bait.

And just when you thought things couldn't get wilder, OpenAI suggests super intelligent AI might be around the corner.

Scientists have cooked up a neural network that's showing off some human-like language skills.

Hmmm...but we thought your modern-day chatbots already did this? Well, unlike ChatGPT, this new AI can smoothly weave new words into existing vocabulary and use 'em in fresh scenarios.

Ever heard of 'systematic generalization'? It's us humans using new words in various settings effortlessly.

While traditional neural nets struggle with this, this new AI's showing promising signs.

And get this: while GPT-4 is fantastic at chit-chat, it fumbles on tasks this new neural net aces.

The near-AI future? Might be a bit smarter than we thought.

🤑 AI FUNDRAISING WRAP UP
  • Zhipu: This Chinese AI development company recently secured more than $342 million from investors since the beginning of the year. This funding round witnessed participation from some of China’s tech giants, including Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings Ltd.

Originating from China's prestigious Tsinghua University in 2019, Zhipu stands as a leading figure in the realm of AI. The company emphasizes the adaptability of ChatGLM-6B, as it can efficiently run on consumer-grade graphic cards, showcasing its versatility in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

  • Perplexity: According to Silicon Angle, this popular generative AI search startup is poised to potentially close a round at a $500 million valuation, a leap from its $150 million valuation in March. The funding is expected to be led by Institutional Venture Partners LLC, with notable AI experts like Yann LeCun and Ashish Vaswani among its previous backers.

Perplexity AI is revolutionizing online search with its generative AI-powered "answer engine." Instead of traditional keyword-based searches yielding a list of links, Perplexity allows users to ask questions conversationally and receive precise answers backed by source lists.

  • CentML: This startup recently announced a successful $27 million extended seed round, which brought their total raised to $30.5 million. Key participants in this round included Gradient Ventures, TR Ventures, Nvidia, and Microsoft Azure AI VP Misha Bilenko.

CentML is focused on developing tools to enhance the efficiency and performance of deploying ML models. Co-founded by Gennady Pekhimenko, the startup aims to build tech that identifies bottlenecks during model training, predicts deployment costs and time, and automatically optimizes workloads for specific hardware.
