The AI world was in a collective panic today… The reason?

All of OpenAI’s models were down. 😱

That’s right, for a 5 hour period on Tuesday, OpenAI’s services were rendered inoperable. (The longest outage in its history)

This had a cascading impact on ANY product built on top of OpenAI’s APIs.

This Twitter user summarized the impact perfectly:

This outage demonstrated how dependent the industry has become on just one company. (Similar to the early days of the cloud)

While we wait on OpenAI to reveal the reason for the outage, here’s some fun speculation:

Here’s a story for you all…

Back in 2020 I published a book on Amazon. My Big Brain partner Parth has also published 3 best-sellers.

In both our cases, it took us over a year of hard work in order to complete it.

But nowadays, we could have done it in less than 24 hours.

How?

With ChatGPT of course.

According to Reuters, Amazon has seen a spike in e-books that list “ChatGPT” as the author. 200 E-books to be specific.

And that’s only counting the people who were honest enough to list ChatGPT. (the actual number is likely much higher)

Reuters interviewed one man who said he used ChatGPT to create a 30-page illustrated children’s book in a matter of hours!

He’s now selling it for $9.99 online.

Other authors are expressing a concern over a flood of low-quality AI books flooding the market.

This might make it difficult for real authors (like us 😉😉) to stand out.

It will be interesting to see how Amazon addresses this issue moving forward…
