🔦 INTRODUCING MICROSOFT’S 365 COPILOT

Microsoft has announced the launch of 365 Copilot!

This AI-powered assistant will help users generate documents, emails, presentations, and more.

Let's break it down.👇

1. Copilot will appear as a chatbot alongside Microsoft 365 apps.

Some of its capabilities will include:
-Generating text in documents
-Creating PowerPoint presentations based on Word documents
-Assisting with features like SWOT analyses or PivotTables in Excel (more on this below).

2. Users will be able to summon Copilot in Microsoft Teams to provide all sorts of information.

This includes upcoming meetings, organizational changes and even updates on co-workers once they've returned from vacation!

3. Copilot will also exist in Outlook. This will allow it to summarize email threads and creating draft responses with toggles to adjust the tone or length of an email.

With businesses relying on this tech, it's vital that it is accurate and safe. This is why the system is currently being tested with a small group of customers.

It will also improve the quality of the prompts it's given by sending them to the Microsoft Graph. This will give it further context and data before sending it to the GPT-4 large language model.

Microsoft plans to expand the preview in the coming months.

🔦 CAN AI PREVENT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS?

Maryland's Charles Co. Public Schools will add AI "visual gun detection technology" to their facilities.

They're the latest in a growing number of D.C. area public schools to use similar measures.

How exactly would something like this work?

The technology combines outdoor school camera software and an emergency alert system to provide a "robust response within seconds of a gun detection being verified."

The system will provide advanced warning before a situation can occur. This will allow officials to notify police of safety concerns in a much faster manner.

The program was funded through a grant from the Maryland Center for School Safety with a cost of $207,000.

This is expected to cover funding for two years, with costs then shifting to the Charles Co.'s Office of School Safety and Security.

District schools are planning to have these systems implemented by the end of the 2022-23 school year.

Some testing of software at select pilot schools has already started before and after school days.

🔦 WHY AI WON’T REPLACE HUMAN ART

What makes an artist’s work special?

It’s a question that has been asked many times over throughout human history.

With the release of Midjourney V5, artists have never had more reason to ponder it.

First of all, it’s important to define the idea of what makes a work “better” than another.

The mistake is to assume that the meaning of "better" will stay the same. Rather, collective tastes are constantly being reshaped by society and its modern age.

As technical advances change our sense of what is appealing, the change often runs against the grain of technology rather than with it.

One can view this as a “supply/demand” dynamic.

If this is the case for AI-generated art, then we may actually see human-generated art gain in value as the former becomes more prevalent.

Only time will tell.

🤖 AI COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Today’s AI community spotlight is on Linus Ekenstam.

We highlighted Linus’ awesome thread on GPT-4 earlier this week. He is also a pro at using Midjourney. (And he always posts the prompts in the Alt text on Twitter)

He’s currently working on BedtimestoryAI, which creates bedtime stories powered by AI. Linus is definitely somebody to keep an eye on in the space!
