🔦 META’S LANGUAGE MODEL GOT LEAKED!

Leave it to 4Chan to create some chaos on the internet.

Last week a user leaked a torrent link to Meta’s newest model LLaMA. You can see it for yourself on this thread.

(Warning: 4chan boards are very unfiltered)

This model was only supposed to be available to select researchers and other government entities. But now it appears that anyone can access it.

Thanks to the leak we did learn more about the model. Namely that it is massive — the smallest model requires close to 30GB.

Despite the leak, the Meta team stated that they have no intentions of changing their release process.

Proponents of open-source software will tout this as a win.

But these large models & tools can be dangerous if they end up in the wrong hands.

📢 LEARN TWICE AS MUCH IN HALF THE TIME WITH SHORTFORM

Yesterday was a long day for me.

Between creating AI avatars & playing around with ChatGPT, I was wiped.

It got me thinking…how much cooler would it be if I had a second brain? Luckily I discovered Building a Second Brain on Shortform.

Since I was too tired to read the actual book, I started with the 1-page summary on Shortform.

But within a few minutes, even that was too tiring. So I pulled out Shortform mobile app and turned on the audio version.

I enjoyed a peaceful walk around lake Austin while listening through my Airpods.

🔦 ABOUND RAISES $601M TO REVOLUTIONIZE BANKING WITH AI

For most of human history, the banking industry has been closed off & controlled by a handful of powerful entities.

That could change in the coming years as new technologies enable a more open banking system.

One example is Decentralized Finance via cryptocurrencies and blockchains. But it looks like AI could play a role in accelerating this vision as well.

Abound is a UK-based consumer lending service powering the future of open banking.

A big part of their strategy is leveraging AI to replace opaque financial systems such as “the credit score”.

While the existing loan system works for some borrowers, it is stacked against those new to the market. (These are known as “prime” or “subprime” cases)

To help solve for this group, Abound is attempting to use AI to build their own risk models on these types of borrowers.

If successful, this could be a game-changer for 15 million people in the UK alone!

🔦 GOOGLE BUILDING 1,000-LANGUAGE AI MODEL

Much of the focus on AI tooling so far has been around chatbots. But Google could soon be changing the game for spoken words as well.

In a recent blog post, Google outlined their goal of building an expansive AI language platform. The platform would reportedly support the 1,000 most popular spoken languages.

A key step in this process will be their Universal Speech Model (USM). The USM is a family of state-of-the-art speech models.

These models have 2B parameters and have been trained on "12 million hours of speech and 28 billion sentences of text, spanning 300+ languages.”

YouTube already uses USM to generate closed captions on videos. But it’s limited to just 100 languages today.

In the future, USM may also allow for new use cases like AR-glasses which translate languages in real time.

(Those would have been great when I got lost in Shanghai a few years ago! 😂)
