Hey Everyone,
Another day, another social media app. But more importantly…another edition of Big Brain.
Today's AI spotlights:
Zuckerberg launches Twitter killer 🧵
Business is booming for the AI cheating detection industry 🔎
Is AI the solution to telemarketing? One man thinks so ☎️
Buckle up, Twitter - Instagram's stepping into your arena. Meta, Facebook's parent company, has rolled out Threads, a direct competitor to Twitter's microblogging service.
And it's not wasting any time in rallying the masses. Mark Zuckerberg's post-launch rallying cry, 'Welcome to Threads,' chalked up 2 million sign-ups in the first two hours.
Building on Instagram's infrastructure and letting users log in with Instagram accounts, Threads is off to a sprint start. And with Twitter's recent user unrest under Elon Musk's rule, Meta's timing could be a game-changer. The fight has begun, and it's going to be a blockbuster.
So what’s the AI angle? Some people believe this is Zuck’s way of obtaining more text-based training data for his models.
It's no secret that AI cheating in schools is on the rise. But luckily, so is the industry that’s catching it.
Since the release of ChatGPT, companies like Winston AI and Turnitin have been making bank detecting AI-involvement in student work.
The trick? Finding an AI "tell," like overusing "the" or superhuman spelling.
John Renaud of Winston AI calls out two key tells: "perplexity" and "burstiness," marking out unusual language patterns and word repetitions.
While we're in an AI generator vs detector arms race, folks like Renaud remain optimistic. But as AI gets smarter, the future remains uncertain.
There's no shortage of use cases for AI. However, we stumbled across one of the best EVER...
Enter Roger Anderson's chatbot: Whitebeard. It's designed to give telemarketers a taste of their own medicine.
How does it do it? By sounding like a clueless senior, endlessly prattling about TV remotes. 😂
In one instance, Kevin, a potentially shady caller, ends up going in circles with Whitebeard's nonsense. This buys time for OpenAI's GPT-4 to prepare responses.
And man, the results are hilarious…
Anderson started this almost a decade ago after a telemarketer upset his son. Fast forward and he has a customer base for his system, Jolly Roger. It’s subscription based and users can choose from Whitebeard, Salty Sally, or Whiskey Jack.
So next time you're frustrated by telemarketers, remember: Whitebeard can help.
