Happy hump day Big Brain fam!
Today we highlight a company that is embracing AI, a company that is fighting AI, and a company being torn apart by AI.
These stories should make it clear that regardless of where you stand, AI is inevitable.
Today's AI spotlights:

π€ IBM REPLACING 7,800 JOBS WITH AI
Oh boy, here we go! IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has hit the pause button on hiring for 7,800 positions that could be easily replaced by AI systems in the future. That's right, it looks like the robots are coming to steal our jobs - at least in HR.
Krishna predicts that certain HR tasks, like employment verification letters or moving employees between departments, will likely be fully automated. But don't worry, folks - evaluating workforce composition and productivity will still be left to us humans for at least the next decade. Whew, dodged a bullet there!
In all seriousness, AI has been stirring up some anxiety lately, with some reports estimating that generative AI may "expose" 300 million jobs to automation. But who needs job security when you have ChatGPT, am I right?
While the impact of AI on jobs is still largely hypothetical, Krishna's announcement marks one of the strongest so far from a major tech company regarding potential labor impacts from AI.
So if you're thinking of going into HR, you might want to reconsider. But if you're a software developer or a customer-facing person, IBM is still looking for talented individuals like you. So don't worry - ChatGPT isn't taking over the entire world⦠yet.
π SAMSUNG PUTS GENERATIVE AI ON HOLD
When you read the words "Samsung bans ChatGPT", you may be a bit confused...
1) Weren't they just about to integrate Bing (which now utilizes the famed chatbot) into all of their phones?
2) What ulterior reasons could be causing this?
Let's work backwards:
The biggest reason for the ban is due to a data leak by company employees back in the beginning of April. ChatGPT was involved, so Samsung isn't taking any chances as they firm up their internal security.
Secondly (or firstly?), Bing integrations are still moving ahead as planned.
It's only the employees who aren't allowed to engage with ChatGPT, or other generative AI tools, for the time being.
Samsung hasn't been the only entity exercising caution. Their ban follows similar restrictions by major banks as well.
Meanwhile, tech companies like LG and SK Hynix are creating guidelines for safe AI-tooling-usage as we speak type.
π AI IS TEARING WIKIPEDIA APART
Ever since 2001, Wikipedia has had a diverse community of contributors.
From debates about inclusionism vs. deletionism to the founding of alternative projects, the community has a history of vigorous debate.
Well, buckle your seatbelts folks, because LLMs are about to make things spicier than an episode of Hot Ones.
Wikipedia's newest divide centers around using tools like ChatGPT for generating content.
This is due in large part to content requiring extensive human review due to misinformation.
The Wikimedia Foundation is exploring tools to identify bot-generated content. This can help lead towards a policy of acceptable LLM use on the platform.
Another facet of the discussion centers around LLMs using Wikipedia content to train on.
One thing we know for sure? Community members will certainly have something to say about it all.
