Happy Hump day Big Brain fam.
AI continues it’s march across the US economy with a new AI healthcare company and an integration with video chat service Zoom.
Let’s dive into it!
Today's AI spotlights:
Hippocratic AI raises $50M for healthcare bot 🏥
Zoom and Anthropic invite Claude to the AI party 💻
CNET staff plays the union card in the battle over AI 🤝
🏥 HIPPOCRATIC AI RAISES $50M FOR HEALTHCARE BOT
Buckle up! Munjal Shah and his squad just bagged $50M to develop Hippocratic AI.
This bot, aka your future health advisor, can't diagnose (yet), but is ready to fill the looming 3 million healthcare worker gap.
Regulators, however, are side-eyeing AI's foray into health, concerned about AI’s inability to swear by the Hippocratic Oath and occasional fake news.
But Shah's team is up for the challenge, training their AI on rigorous certification, human feedback, and even "bedside manner".
In a show-off moment, their model beat GPT-4 by a tiny 0.43% on medical exam questions. But let's not forget, even these smarty-pants bots can make errors and "hallucinate" (it happens to the best of us).
So, ready to spill your health secrets to a bot? Fingers crossed it doesn't get bored!
Note: a16z also did a great write up on their investment as well, which is worth a read.
💻 ZOOM AND ANTHROPIC INVITE CLAUDE TO THE AI PARTY
Another day, another household company bit by the AI bug.
The pitch is that Claude will be the "superhero sidekick" for customer support by guiding customers to the right solutions.
But Zoom’s playing coy about how it'll use Claude elsewhere in its app kingdom.
They already have Zoom IQ, their own OpenAI-powered assistant that can:
Whip up summaries
Draft messages
Create magic whiteboards from text prompts
Adding Claude will hopefully launch Zoom IQ's capabilities into turbo mode.
But it doesn't stop there…
Zoom Ventures, the venture capital arm of the company, is throwing some cash at Anthropic for its troubles!
Zoom’s CPO, Smita Hashim, says it's all part of their "federated approach" to AI.
Sounds a bit like the Avengers but with more algorithms and fewer hammers, right?
Let's just hope this doesn't end with an AI Ultron scenario.😄
🤝 CNET STAFF PLAYS THE UNION CARD IN THE BATTLE OVER AI
CNET’s staff is getting serious...
Now if you're aware of their past, you may think, "They're going full AI!"
Wrong.
They're actually unionizing in order to gain "standard job protections, fair compensation [and] editorial independence...especially as automated technology threatens our jobs and reputations".
This many come off as somewhat ironic, given the company's actions back in January…
But it was actually Red Ventures, CNET's parent company, that was disingenuous about the use of AI tools to write articles.
Therefore, CNET's staff is officially joining forces with the Writers Guild of America, East.
The newly formed CNET Media Workers Union wants a say in how tech is reshaping their work, along with a bit more transparency from the bosses.
Their hope is to join other media sites who've scored wins via unionizing.
So, is Red Ventures ready to recognize their union and start talking terms?
Only time will tell.
