šŸ§  GPT-4 is here!

PLUS: AI without ethics? šŸ¤”

WOW! Thatā€™s all we can say after the craziest day in the history of AI.

Thereā€™s a lot to cover, so weā€™re going to jump right into itā€¦

šŸ”¦ Today's AI spotlights:

  • Ready or not, here comes GPT-4

  • Donā€™t forget about Googleā€™s AI!

  • AI without ethics?

šŸ”¦ READY OR NOT, HERE COMES GPT-4

Remember when ChatGPT hit mainstream?

Feels like a while ago, right?

Actually, it was less than five months ago! And ready or not, OpenAI is about to release an upgraded version of ChatGPT's LLM:

The highly-anticipated GPT-4.

Here are the top 4 (get it) takeaways from OpenAIā€™s announcement:

1) GPT-4 accepts visual inputs: You can now feed GPT a visual input and it will respond according. (Example: provide a picture of ingredients & ask which dish to make)

2) GPT-4 crushed GPT-3.5 in standardized tests: The new model crushed 3.5 on all types of standard exams. Including 90th percentile on the bar and 89th percentile on the SAT MATH section.

3) GPT-4 is now capable of advanced reasoning: As OpenAI researcher Jason Wei put it, GPT-4 is now ā€˜human-levelā€™ on many hard tasks. (before it was surface level)

4) GPT-4 longer context: You can now provide ChatGPT with over 25,000 words of text! This unlocks new use cases like long form content creation.

OpenAI also announced some features that have already been built on top of GPT-4 including features from Duolingo, Stripe, and Khan Academy.

On a personal note: I still remember where I was when Steve Jobs revealed the iPhone.

And something tells me Iā€™ll remember where I was when Sam Altman tweeted about GPT-4.

šŸ”¦ DONā€™T FORGET ABOUT GOOGLEā€™S AI

With all the hype around GPT-4, it would have been easy to miss Googleā€™s massive AI announcements today.

The tech giant will be introducing generative AI features in their Workspace apps. This includes Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides.

This will all be carried out through Googleā€™s most advanced AI model: PaLM.

Some of the examples Google showed in the demo:

  • Generate an email response in Gmail

  • Generate AI imagery, audio, and video in Slides

  • Generate an entire blog post in Docs

Google's goal is to implement these features in a matter of months.

Google is also launching MakerSuite, a tool designed to make it easier for developers to prototype and build generative AI applications.

MakerSuite will allow developers to:

  • Iterate on prompts

  • Augment datasets with synthetic data

  • Fine-tune custom models, (w/ training and deployment handled by Google Cloud)

To start, these tools will be made available to a group of US-based ā€œtrusted testersā€ this month.

Other features should be available to the public later in the year.

Microsoft is also building similar AI features into its Office suite of apps. This includes Word, Teams, and Outlook.

šŸ”¦ AI WITHOUT ETHICS?

Ever since humans discovered AI, many have feared the negative effects it may bring to society.

If you're in this camp, then the following news may be troubling:

Microsoft has laid off the entire ethics team within its AI division. This included engineers, designers, and philosophers.

The move has created a gap in the holistic design of AI products.

The team was responsible for creating rules where none existed.

They even designed a role-playing game to envision potential harms from AI called Judgment Call.

This and other endeavors helped to ensure that the company's responsible AI principles are reflected in its products.

Doesn't sound great, right?

The move comes at a time when the company is leading the charge to take their AI tools mainstream.

The pressure from CEO Satya Nadella and CTO Kevin Scott to move fast is cited as the reason for the team's dismissal.

The company has an active Office of Responsible AI but no dedicated team to ensure AI principles are tied to product design.
