🔦 DUCKASSIST: THE PRIVACY-FOCUSED AI FEATURE ON DUCKDUCKGO

Privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo has launched a new optional AI feature called DuckAssist.

Instead of a chatbot, DuckAssist is an extension of the Instant Answers feature. This uses OpenAI and Anthropic technology to summarize responses and provide conversational links.

DuckAssist uses Wikipedia and Britannica to generate quick answers. It also includes links to the original source in case one needs a citation.

A bit of advice from CEO Gabriel Weinberg:

Users who ask straightforward questions are more likely to provide accurate answers. Another trick is wording queries in question-form or include 'wiki'.

As many know, various AI tools have yielded inaccurate information at times. Luckily, DuckAssist uses a limited number of sources.

This makes its chances of generating incorrect information less likely. (More on this phenomenon in our story below!)

DuckDuckGo plans to release other AI features in the future. The beta version is currently available for free.

🔦 DOES SMALLER MEAN SMARTER?

If you're reading this, it should be no surprise how well AI models like ChatGPT can generate text.

But it may come as a surprise that they generally struggle with math problems.

This happens because of how AI processes data.

Google's Minerva, a super-sized AI model, performed about twice as well in this arena as ChatGPT did.

That is exactly why scientists are trying to make AI models smaller and more efficient.

This involves mimicking aspects of the brain and neural activity. Fascinating stuff!

Improving AI models' efficiency is of the utmost importance. This in large part has to do with scalability and sustainability.

🔦 THE IMPACT OF AI ON ART: SPIELBERG’S CONCERNS

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg recently shared his concerns about the impact of AI on art.

Spielberg acknowledged the benefits of this new tech. But he also expressed worry about giving it "autonomy".

Furthermore, he voiced concerns that AI could take the arts industry over. In his opinion, this could lead to the loss of human creativity.

This begs the question: will this lead to the loss of the human element in art? Or can AI make do without us?

Spielberg himself believes that the uniqueness of the human soul is not reproducible by AI.

The director shared his thoughts amidst general concern over AI's impact on the entertainment industry.

This has can be seen specifically by Hollywood and video game voice actors for fear that this tech may replace their jobs.
