Why your next lawyer may not be human
Welcome to The Big Brain,
The daily newsletter that makes you smarter about AI.
Here's what we've got cooking today 👇
🔦 AI SPOTLIGHT: ROBOT LAWYER
Take a moment to picture the following scene:
You've just arrived to a court room to dispute a speeding ticket you received last month.
You don't have the funds to hire a real lawyer, but you're hell-bent on fighting the ticket anyways.
You walk to the front of the court room and sit down on a wooden chair. You look at the table in front of you. There's a cell phone on it.
It starts ringing and the judge motions you to pick it up. You press the green answer button, and slowly lift it up to your ear...
Hello.
My name is Robo, and I am an AI-powered lawyer.
I will be defending you today. Just listen to everything I say and repeat it to the judge.
We'll have this case won in no time.
While the story you just read might feel like something out of a dystopian future, it's a future that might not be far away...
In fact, it's the exact situation that a defendant is going to be in next month.
According to Joshua Browder, the CEO of DoNotPay, his company will be the first to use an AI-powered lawyer to defend a client in court next month.
Here's how it will work:
When the client arrives to court they will receive a call from DoNotPay's AI-driven lawyer.
The AI program will listen to the court arguments and create responses for the defendant in real time.
The defendant will listen to these responses through headphones and then repeat them to the judge.
And the best part? If the robot lawyer loses the case, DoNotPay will cover any fines.
While this idea does sound cool in theory, there are some short term hurdles before the company can commercialize their product.
For starts, their tech isn't legal in most courtrooms. Since some states require all parties to consent to recordings, the DoNotPay model would not be feasible.
However, just because it's not possible today, doesn't mean it's not worth pursuing.
As Browder stated, their ultimate goal is to democratize legal representation by making it free for those who can't afford it.
In the mean time, DoNotPay seems to be doing well with customer service disputes and lowering bills. They've already won 2 million customer service disputes to date.
So if you're one of those SouthWest Airlines customers who got screwed over the holidays... you know who to call.
