PLUS: Spotify launches an AI DJ

Hey Big Brain fam!

We’re back with the latest stories, tools, and entertainment in the world of AI.

Let’s dive into it.

🔦 Today's AI spotlights:

🔦 US COPYRIGHT OFFICE DEALS HUGE BLOW TO AI ART

I made this image with Midjourney, so technically you can all use it and I can do nothing to stop you. 😂

The US Copyright office just played an UNO reverse card on AI artists.

Back in November the office approved a copyright claim by Kristina Kashtanova.

They have now (partially) reversed their decision.

Here’s how it went down 👇

  • The work in question is a comic book called Zarya of the Dawn. Kashtanova used Midjourney AI to generate the art for the book.

  • The Copyright Office claimed that the text and arrangement of the comic book are covered, but the Midjourney images are not.

  • The legal letter stated the images “are not the product of human authorship.” They cited previous cases of people not being able to cite the Holy Spirit as an author. (As well as the infamous incident of a selfie taken by a monkey)

This letter is likely to set a new legal precedent for AI art.

It also gives an interesting new perspective on the art space.

Most of the AI art stories have involved other artists trying to make claims against AI art generation tools. See Getty Images vs Stable Diffusion for one example.

Oh how the tables have turned…

🔦 SPOTIFY LAUNCHES AN AI DJ

What if you could have your own personal DJ in your pocket?

That’s exactly what Spotify intends to do with it’s upcoming launch of its ‘DJ’ feature.

A preview of the upcoming DJ feature

The are 2 main aspects to the DJ:

  1. A personalized playlist customized to a user’s listening habits.

  2. A smooth AI-generated DJ voice occasionally voicing over songs.

Back in the “old days,” this is how most people listened to music. A radio host would give some commentary, and then play a new song.

This is debatably even better, since the experience will be personalized to each listener.

To pull this off, Spotify is using its existing personalization tech and its 2022 Sonantic aquisition.

There are also reports that they are leveraging OpenAI technology. But no official partnership has been announced.

As of now, the feature is only available in English for Spotify Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.

🔦 TOME RAISES $43 MILLION FOR AI STORYTELLING

Want to make a pitch deck on a short timeline?

Simply type some words into a black chat box, and Tome will create an ENTIRE deck for you in a minute.

I’ve tried this feature myself, and I have to say, it’s pretty impressive.

This impressive functionality was enough to secure Tome $43 million in funding at a $300 million valuation. 🤯

What’s crazy is that Tome is still pre-revenue!

In fairness, the tool is pretty awesome and they are the fastest productivity software to ever reach 1 million users.

We will have to wait and see whether or not Tome can grow into this valuation. But they certainly have plenty of cash runway to do it now.
