PLUS: A new tool shows if robots will take your job

Good morning (or afternoon, or night) Everyone!

The AI robots are coming for all of our jobs. I'm sorry, none of you are safe.

Actually just kidding. Some of you are safe according to the tool we cover today. Anyways...

πŸ”¦ Today's AI spotlights:

  • ChatGPT has fierce competition

  • OpenAI hires contractors to replace basic coding

  • New tool shows if robots will take your job

πŸ”¦ CHATGPT HAS FIERCE COMPETITION

Whenever there is a huge prize, competition is sure to follow.

AI has the potential to create trillions of $ in value. This is why many companies are going all out to become the leader.

While ChatGPT is an early leader in the generative AI space, that doesn't mean they can't be caught...

Here are 3 companies that are making big moves in AI:

1) Baidu: The "Google of China" is looking to release some big AI updates in 2023. This includes their own ChatGPT-style application in March. So far, the company has invested billions of $ into their AI program 'Ernie'.

2) Anthropic: The NY Times reported that the company is close to raising another $300 million at a $5 billion valuation. They have their own AI chatbot known as 'Claude' which is currently in beta.

Note: The company has already raised $704 million. But it could be clawed back since they received the majority from disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried 😬

3) Character.AI: This company gained attention after it launched custom chatbots based on popular characters. These include: Elon Musk, Billie Eilish, and Albert Einstein. The company is reportedly seeking to raise $250 million at a $1 billion valuation.

With this much capital flowing into AI companies, we can't help but wonder:

Is all of this investment justified?

Or is it simply the beginning of the new VC-driven bubble...

πŸ”¦ OPENAI HIRES CONTRACTORS TO REPLACE BASIC CODING

Could OpenAI contractors be putting themselves out of a job?

This is what appears to be happening based on an article by Semafor.

According to the piece, OpenAI has hired 1,000 remote contractors over the past 6 months.

60% of the contractors were hired to do "data labeling" to help train AI models.

The other 40% are helping train OpenAI's Codex tool.

The Codex tool is an AI system that translates natural language to code. We've seen the potential of Codex with Github's implementation called Copilot.

But here's where things start to get weird...

An anonymous developer talked to Semafor about his experience interviewing at OpenAI:

  • The developer was from South America and claims he had to complete a 5 hour unpaid coding test for OpenAI.

  • There were 2 parts to his assignment. In the first part, he had to explain in plain english how to approach the problem. In the second part, he was asked to provide a solution.

It appears that OpenAI may be leveraging contractors and job candidates to train it's Codex system.

The irony is that this same system could one day put those people out of a job.

πŸ”¦ NEW TOOL SHOWS IF ROBOTS WILL TAKE YOUR JOB

We've talked a lot about AI taking people's jobs recently. But is it really true?

Well you can see for yourself with this new tool: willrobotstakemyjob.com

The website lists different jobs and the level of 'automation risk' for each one.

Give it a try for yourself!
