🧠 Is Bing about to kill Google?
How AI is posed to shift the online search industry
Welcome to The Big Brain,
A daily AI newsletter that is brings you the latest news and use-cases, while trying to appease our future AI overlords.
Here's what we've got for you today 👇
🔦 AI spotlight: Bing takes on Google
Microsoft has attempted to beat Google in search for years to no avail...
But is AI about to change that?
This morning, it was announced that Microsoft was in talks to invest a whopping $10 Billion in ChatGPT-owner OpenAI.
As part of the deal, Microsoft would also get 75% of OpenAI's profits until it recoups its initial investment and then own 49% of the company afterwards.
The bet is that by integrating AI into their products like Bing, they will FINALLY have an opportunity to take market share from the king (i.e. Google).
For context, the online search industry is an absolute gold mine, with Google raking in $40 Billion in search ad revenue in Q3 2022 alone. This isn't that surprising when you consider that Google owns over 90% of all search traffic on the internet.
However, tools like ChatGPT and DALL·E could help make the online search experience more fulfilling for users, by offering more detailed responses and eye-catching image generations.
By adding these tools directly into the product, Bing may suddenly go from the red-headed step child to the prettiest girl at the dance.
While this is an intriguing narrative, it's important that we don't get too ahead of ourselves. Keep in mind, that Google has both the proprietary data set and the compute power needed to build their own compelling offerings.
Could they have their own AI solution up their sleeves?
Only time will tell if this move from Microsoft will pay off and allow Bing to finally have its moment. In the mean time, you'll still find me using Google to get my information (sorry Satya).
