Hello AI Adventurers,

This week, as the cherry blossoms of May bring a breath of renewal, we too dive into the fresh advancements in the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

Today's AI spotlights:

  • Apple puts ChatGPT in time out 😰

  • AI is giving loved ones a chance to ‘talk to the dead’ 👻

  • G7 discusses technical standards for AI👨‍⚖️

😰 APPLE PUTS CHATGPT IN TIME OUT

Apple and privacy have an interesting relationship. But that’s not stopping them from putting their foot down when it comes to ChatGPT-related-data concerns.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple's employees are prohibited from using ChatGPT or Github's AI assistant Copilot.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that this has been the case for some time.

OpenAI uses data from ChatGPT's usage to sharpen its the LLM. Apple, with its precious trade secrets, is concerned that its employees might unwittingly provide OpenAI a goldmine of info.

Can you blame them?

And it's not just Apple. Big players like JP Morgan, Verizon, and Amazon are all approaching the chat tooling with caution.

The timing of this coming to light is especially dramatic, given that OpenAI just rolled out a free-to-use ChatGPT iOS app.

Will this ban be permanent? Or will the company eventually loosen their position? We will have to wait to find out.

👻 AI IS GIVING LOVED ONES A CHANCE TO ‘TALK TO THE DEAD’

AI is getting a new job: serving as a medium to connect the living and the dead.

Enter the world of 'grief' bots: they're a blend of memories, old photos and AI tech recreating your dear departed ones for one last conversation.

Creepy? Or closure?

Take Yu Jialin, a software engineer who breathed digital life into his late grandpa. Using letters, photos and messages, he trained a language model to imitate his deceased family member. Anyone getting Black Mirror vibes?

And there's more. Using this tech, an entire Chinese cemetery brought voices back from the grave during the Tomb Sweeping Festival. Not 'Hey Siri', but 'Hey Grandma' now.

But it's not all seances and sentimental reunions. Ethical questions are of conncern, like what about consent from the dead, or the chance of identity theft. Not to mention the emotional impact...

For Yu, the reunion was short-lived. He pulled the plug on grandpa-bot, fearing emotional dependence.

Even in the AI world, goodbyes are hard.

👨‍⚖️ G7 DISCUSSES TECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR AI

G7 leaders recently convened in Japan, focusing on the governance of AI technology. The consensus? We need standards for "trustworthy" AI, even as we grapple with what that means exactly.

In a surprising twist, it's the European Union leading the regulatory charge with the world's first AI laws. EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has set the bar high, insisting AI be accurate, reliable, safe, and non-discriminatory.

Amidst this, AI star ChatGPT is stealing the limelight, causing concern among big names in tech. It's clear: lawmakers need to catch up with AI's rapid growth.

Meanwhile, the US plays the skeptic. President Biden questions the dangers of AI, while Japan, in contrast, supports AI adoption while keeping an eye on the risks.

China's approach? Aligning AI with its socialist values.

Despite their differences, G7 leaders are forming a forum dubbed the "Hiroshima AI process" to tackle AI-related issues. This is truly a global conversation.
