Happy Monday Big Brain Fam!

Apologies for getting todayโ€™s edition out a little later than usual. I was feeling a little under the weather this weekend, but these AI stories have my energy levels back up!

๐Ÿ”ฆ Today's AI spotlights:

  • How AI is helping scientists study Mars ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

  • US state AI regulation speeds ahead of Congress ๐ŸŽ

  • Amazon goes big on AI robots ๐Ÿค–

๐Ÿ‘ฝ HOW AI IS HELPING SCIENTISTS STUDY MARS

Picture this: Mars Rover, but instead of phoning home like a needy college kid, it's a smarty-pants robot with an AI brain called ChatGPT.

It's sifting through Martian dirt, analyzing the heck out of it, and drafting a Science journal article on the fly. No human intervention. Sounds like a sci-fi movie, right?

Researchers are divided. Sercan Ozcan, a guy who probably knows a lot more about AI than you do, warns ChatGPT could be a wild ride since it's prone to 'hallucination'. Not ideal if you're relying on it for accurate Mars reports.

Then there's Steve Ruff, a Mars enthusiast, who believes that 'on-the-spot' manuscripts are a pipe dream. He thinks AI could be handy for other things like navigation, though.

Nathalie Cabrol gets philosophical. She's all for using AI as a tool but warns against letting it replace human creativity and learning. Her fear? An AI takeover leading to a transhumanist future.

And then we have Amy Williams, who sees AI as a tool to help humans, not replace them. She's impressed by ChatGPT's knowledge but recognizes its limitations, like that time it didn't know the latest on Martian organic molecules.

So, do we let Mars Rover turn into an AI journalist? I'll leave that for the sci-fi writers to decide.

๐ŸŽ US STATE AI REGULATION SPEEDS AHEAD OF CONGRESS

AI regulation in the US is...well, a mixed bag to say the least. While some parts of the world are moving swiftly on this front, the US federal legislation is essentially in a standstill.

So where does the responsibility lie on a practical level? It seems to be trickling down to state governments.

Specifically, six states have taken matters into their own hands:

  • California

  • Colorado

  • Connecticut

  • Illinois

  • Maryland

  • Virginia

These states are introducing laws by the end of 2023 that will aim to prevent businesses from using AI to deceive or discriminate.

But the situation is tricky. It essentially revolves around a patchwork of laws that leave businesses struggling to navigate the compliance landscape.

Which sectors have it the worst, you ask? Housing, employment and insurance.

California is standing out, having allocated resources for enforcing its laws.

Other states? It's unclear if they have the means to enforce their own regulations.

๐Ÿค– AMAZON GOES BIG ON AI ROBOTS

With Google's I/O stirring up lots of AI excitement, it's no wonder that other companies are getting jealous.

Amazon might be taking away some of that spotlight soonโ€ฆ

They're working on a project called Burnham, which is aimed at improving its Astro home robot.

The original Astro fell short of expectations, lacking functionality and versatility (not having arms just might have had something to do with this). But Amazon believes Burnham could be the key to unlocking Astro's potential.

Burnham is designed to infuse Astro with "intelligence and a conversational spoken interface." What does this add up to? A much smarter and more capable robot.

For example, Astro reportedly could handle tasks such as finding a forgotten stove or lost keys, and even monitor the activities in the house.

But don't get too excited yet. Burnham is still in the development stage, and it will be some time before it's ready for public use.

In the meantime, the current Astro model is still available by invitation only. And how much do they want for this (somewhat dysfunctional) robot? $1,600.

We don't know about you, but we'll wait for Burnham before making any considerations.
