Happy hump day Big Brain fam!
We have yet another warning from experts that AI can destroy society long term. While AI continues to cause concern in the political realm short term.
Today's AI spotlights:
Top AI voices warn of ‘risk of extinction’ ☠️

☠️ TOP AI VOICES WARN OF ‘RISK OF EXTINCTION’
AI big dogs, including DeepMind's Demis Hassabis and OpenAI's Sam Altman, have issued a tweet-sized warning about AI posing a potentially existential threat.
This group, along with other distinguished minds in AI, suggest we treat AI risks on par with those of pandemics or nuclear war.
Some doubters assert that AI is not yet sophisticated enough to pose such a threat, citing its struggles with tasks like autonomous driving.
But both camps agree on one thing. Current AI can be misused in many terrifying ways, including mass-surveillance and spreading false information.
It's like having a toddler with a marker - except the marker is technology and the walls are society.
📊 ONLY 14% OF AMERICANS HAVE TRIED CHATGPT
Alright, ladies and gents! Pew Research spilled the beans: 58% of U.S. adults know about ChatGPT, but only 14% have dabbled. A game of hard to get, perhaps?
Looks like the smarty-pants crowd (those with higher degrees and fatter paychecks) are more likely to be in the know.
2 other groups leading the pack are: Asian adults and folks under 30.
The verdict on its usefulness? Mixed. Some find it handy for work and learning, others for entertainment. Yet, some folks are skeptical, calling it "somewhat useful".
Is it the tech messiah we've been waiting for? Or just another tool in the digital shed? Whatever it is, ChatGPT isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Buckle up, folks!
🥸 HOW WILL DEEPFAKES EFFECT THE US ELECTIONS?
AI is doing a bang-up job playing the villain in the 2024 U.S. elections.
Its specialty? Deepfakes. Two prominent ones include:
Hillary Clinton endorsing Ron DeSantis? Yup, that's a deepfake.
Biden acting out of character towards a trans woman? Deepfake again.
It's becoming harder for voters to tell the reel from the real. Worse, folks are using these tech tricks to sling mud at opponents.
Even Trump's dipped his toes in, sharing a doctored video of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. Major social media platforms are trying to remove these fakes, but effectiveness varies.
The tech industry knows it's a problem. Even OpenAI is wrestling with it. They've tried some safeguards, but the system's not foolproof. Small startups, on the other hand, don't seem too bothered about regulating political content.
Despite all the chaos, some political players see potential. They're looking to harness the power of AI to supercharge campaigns.
As they say, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
